What's this website all about?
All the information you could ever want about long-term budget travel, written by a Miami chica
¡Hola! Chica Travels is a website dedicated to providing information to young Americans interested in traveling and living abroad. Born originally as a (now abandoned) travel blog, this website also encourages Hispanic Americans and other minorities to see the world outside of the US. Traveling internationally is not just a luxury saved for rich kids with trust funds; everyone with an American passport (and even those with foreign passports) have some, if not all, of the options listed here available to them.
As someone who has been budget traveling for years, I’ve gotten many comments from people who want to know how I’ve managed to travel for so long and how I can afford it. The truth is that there are many options out there but people never find out about them. My hope is that the information I’ve provided here will at least give everyone a place to start their travel plans.
Because I am from Miami, I understand how many Hispanic Americans and other minorities have only ever left the US to visit their families’ home country, if they even have a passport at all. The “3-0-5 til I die” culture is real and a lot of people never leave South Florida. While Miami is a great city, there’s a whole wide world out there to be explored and this website will ensure that you have the tools you need to do so.
Clicking on “Cheap Ways to Go Abroad” will provide you basic information on ways to work, volunteer, or study abroad - options that will allow you to stay abroad for longer periods of time and really explore a different country.
The section “Useful Links” will also provide you with tips and other random information for those tricky aspects of life that need to be resolved if you plan to stay abroad for a significant amount of time, such as insurance.
While I try to provide as much information as I can, my lists are not comprehensive and there are always other options that I might not have mentioned. If you think I missed anything, please let me know. You can get in touch with me a variety of ways, all of which are listed in the “Contact” section of the website.
¡Buena suerte chicos y chicas!
Half chilena – half gringa
I am a Miami Chica in her early twenties that loves traveling and has been doing so most of her life. After graduating from the University of Florida (Go Gators!), I worked for a year at an academic publisher before leaving to follow my dream of traveling/living abroad. Since then I have bartended my way through Australia and backpacked through Southeast Asia. Starting in October I'll be in Antarctica, working as a steward at McMurdo Station for the austral summer.
I was born and raised in the county of Dade
I am from Miami, the Magic City. Known for beautiful beaches, hard core partying, and delicious Cuban food, it is one of the greatest cities in the world and I’m proud to be from there. Miami will always be home but I have a serious travel addiction so you’ll usually find me exploring somewhere new.
